Segarra Names Campaign Manager…

…who has a flair for commas and is apparently well seasoned.  Press release is below, and we sent an email to the mayor’s office to confirm the details.

We don’t know much about Sherwood.  Here’s what looks to be his web page, and here’s what looks to be some less-than-flattering baggage.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE                                                                             Contact: Phil Sherwood

March 1, 2011                                                                                                 Cell: 860-796-2398

HARTFORD, CT – Today Hartford Mayor, and candidate for the same office, Pedro E. Segarra announced that Phil Sherwood, a seasoned and successful campaign professional, will be assuming the role of Campaign Manager for Segarra’s campaign.

“Phil is seasoned, bright and talented.  He has lived and worked in Hartford, and has the invaluable experience of having worked in many of Connecticut’s major urban areas.  He understands the challenges that Hartford faces and I am proud that he has agreed to manage my campaign,” said Segarra.

Sherwood, former Majority Leader of the New Britain Board of Alderman, will be taking leave from the Connecticut Citizen Action Group, where he currently serves as Deputy Director.  Most recently Sherwood was the campaign manager to State Senator Terry Gerratana who on February 22nd defeated long-time New Britain Mayor Timothy Stewart in a special election held to replace the vacated 6th district State Senate seat.

“I am honored to have the opportunity to work with Mayor Segarra,” said Sherwood.  “He is a thoughtful and committed leader whose vision is both inspiring and forward-thinking.  This is a new beginning for the City, a transformative time, and the Mayor has said that this campaign must be driven at the grassroots level.  Mayor Segarra has focused on pushing a tired and divisive style of politics aside and putting the residents first; this campaign will model that philosophy.”

Sherwood has managed or consulted on Connecticut campaigns ranging from statewide, to ballot and referenda initiatives, to municipal races.  He was also a leader in the historical Clean Election law and ethics reforms that followed in the wake of the Rowland scandal.  As the former Majority Leader of the New Britain City Council Sherwood championed and passed new and stronger ethics codes for local public officials and led initiatives that made city government more open and transparent.  Sherwood stated that a major reason for wanting to work for Mayor Segarra was the Mayor’s demonstrated commitment to making government more accountable and accessible to the people of Hartford.

  1. Is it customary for campaign managers to issue press releases about themselves becoming campaign managers? This seems like a hall of mirrors to me, and more about the manager than the campaign.
